University of Dundee

Overview
The origins of the University of Dundee go back to 1881, when University College, Dundee was founded. The College then had a 70-year relationship with the University of St Andrews before it became an independent university in 1967. It is firmly established as a traditional university, grounded in excellence in teaching and research.

The past five years have seen rapid growth at the University, with total student numbers doubling to around 18,000, supported by over 3,000 staff. The international contingent now makes up almost 16 per cent of the total and comes from over 80 different countries. Dundee has the nicest climate of all of Scotland’s cities, with more sunshine and lower rainfall; its location on the coast means that it avoids the most extreme winter temperatures. The city enjoys a spectacular scenic location on the estuary of the River Tay on the east coast of Scotland, with the Highlands to the north and St Andrews and Edinburgh to the south.

Dundee is a campus university five minutes away from the city centre. The city has a population of 180,000 which means that it is small enough not to be overwhelming but has plenty of demand to support a wide variety of cultural, sporting and shopping facilities.

Academic strengths
Dundee offers the widest range of undergraduate courses in Scotland. There are seven academic faculties: Arts and Social Sciences; Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design; Education and Social Work; Engineering and Physical Sciences; Law and Accountancy; Life Sciences; and Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing.

In 1998, the University received the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for higher education institutions for its work in pioneering research into keyhole surgery, while the Life Sciences and Medicine schools are conducting high-profile research into areas such as cancer and diabetes. The majority of the University’s research is conducted in departments graded 4, 5 or 5* (indicating research of international excellence).

In 2004 the University of Dundee received the Scottish University of the Year Award from the Sunday Times Good University Guide and in 2005 the University of Dundee was named top in the United Kingdom for teaching quality by The Times Higher Education Supplement.

Facilities
The University of Dundee has an integrated campus where the teaching areas, social facilities, sports centre and guaranteed accommodation are mainly on one central site.

There are 10 IT suites on campus with several hundred PCs enabling access to a range of software, the internet and email. The main university library contains more than 500,000 volumes and there are further libraries for the departments of Law, Art and Design, Medicine, and Nursing.

The University of Dundee is undertaking a substantial investment in student accommodation and by 2007 the University will offer approximately 1500 en-suite single study bedrooms, complete with internet access and phone lines.

Student life
Dundee is a lively place with more students per head of population than any other city in the UK. Entertainment focuses on the tastes and budgets of students, with a variety of restaurants and cafés, cinemas and theatres as well as excellent sports facilities.

The University was voted the friendliest campus in Scotland by an independent guide. All major faiths have facilities for worship either on-campus or in the city. Dundee University Students’ Association (DUSA) is the hub of student life, and is run by students for students.

It has entertainment, shopping and welfare services and is the base for university sports clubs and societies.
