University of Abertay, Dundee
Over View
The University of Abertay Dundee was founded in 1888 as Dundee Technical Institute. It is a friendly and supportive institution with 5,084 students, 65 per cent of whom are from Scotland, five per cent from Northern Ireland, three per cent from England and Wales and 26 per cent from countries outside Europe including China, India and Malaysia.
Our aim is ‘to put the student at the centre’ and this is reflected both in the resources that we provide and in the encouraging learning environment that is created.
Located in the centre of bustling Dundee City on the banks of the River Tay, all of the University’s buildings are grouped around its award-winning library. A lecturers to students ratio of 1:17 helps create a supportive and friendly community.
The University has four academic schools (faculties): Computing and Creative Technologies, Dundee Business School, Contemporary Sciences, and Social and Health Sciences.
Academic strengths
Abertay is the top university in Scotland for environmental research. Another speciality is the world-leading computer games technology courses that we offer. The University has also been rated Excellent for its teaching of economics.
The Financial Times (2002) placed Abertay as one of the UK’s top modern universities and named it as the most improved UK university in the last five years. In addition to this, our Gaelic Sports Association continues to dominate Scotland in Gaelic Football, Hurling and Shinty.
Facilities
As recognised by the Financial Times (May 2002), the University of Abertay Dundee is the leading university for investment in student computing facilities, which are central to every course at the University. Networked PCs are available for students’ use across the campus and the ratio of more than one PC for every four students is one of the best in any UK university. An ongoing programme of enhancement ensures that hardware and software are at industry standard and all students have free access to the internet.
Formally opened by Her Majesty the Queen in June 1998, the University’s award-winning library includes fully-equipped seminar rooms for teaching information and IT skills, group study rooms, a Centre for Language Learning and Self Study, and a specialist legal library. Part of the building has 24-hour access to IT and study facilities as well as a time-out area.
The University provides access to some of the finest sporting facilities in the country. There are many Student Association sports clubs and an Abertay Elite Athletes programme, which assists students with incorporating high levels of training and competition with their academic study. The new Abertay Sports Injury Clinic provides in-house expertise to sports performers.
Student life
Our new Student Centre in the heart of the university campus, opened in 2005, provides an advanced and innovative facility for Dundee and for future generations of Abertay students and staff by creating a vibrant heart for the University with first class social and cultural facilities. We have invested £6 million into getting it exactly right, from the beautiful red sandstone exterior to the original interior design that hosts a cinema, coffee bars, a debating chamber, exhibition space, performance space and a fabulous roof-top garden.
The Student Centre provides leisure and fun events including theme nights, comedy nights, live bands, karaoke and quiz nights. Activities reflect the multicultural nature of the student community by celebrating events such as Diwali – the Indian Festival of Light, Chinese New Year, and the Mardi Gras.
