University of Aberdeen

Over View Founded in 1495, the University of Aberdeen is the UK’s fifth oldest university with a student population of nearly 14,000. Internationally renowned for the quality of its teaching and research, the University has had, over the years, four Nobel Prize winners. Currently around 19 per cent of Aberdeen's student population are from overseas, coming from 120 different nations.

Academic strengths
The University offers more than 590 first degree programmes across the areas of arts and divinity, education, medicine, science and engineering, and social sciences and law. Flexibility is a key strength of the University curriculum, which enables students to mix, match and switch subjects en route to their tailor-made degree.

The University is very forward-thinking, with courses that include ground-breaking disciplines focused firmly on the 21st century, such as computing and e-business.

The most recent Research Assessment Exercise allocated 10 departments within the University a high rating of 5, marking them as internationally distinguished. Therefore, 85 per cent of Aberdeen’s staff are working in departments that are recognised as centres of national or international excellence.

Within six months of graduating, 97 per cent of Aberdeen students enter jobs, research posts or further study, an indication of the close links with industry, major research centres and leading international universities that Aberdeen works hard to implement.

Facilities
The University offers excellent facilities for students including a beautiful central campus where ancient buildings sit side by side with modern, first-class laboratories, up-to-date computing facilities, and the latest library technology. The University of Aberdeen houses five libraries which together contain over a million books and nearly 1,500 study places.

The University of Aberdeen has impressive computing classrooms many of which are available 24 hours a day and wireless network access is available at Hotspot locations around the campus. Students have free access to the internet and email.

Aberdeen prides itself on the network of support it provides for students, which includes a Medical Practice, Student Advisory Centre, International Student Adviser, Chaplaincies and a confidential Counselling Service. All new students are guaranteed a place in university-managed or privately-owned accommodation on or near campus.

The University’s International Support Adviser is the first point of contact for new students arriving from outside the UK. The adviser organises a personal welcome for students on arrival and can help with any visa or immigration issues.

The University has outstanding on-campus sports facilities which include a swimming pool, playing fields, cardio-suite, performance gym and a brand new sports centre.

Student life
Students describe Aberdeen as offering an unrivalled social scene. The Students’ Association funds over 150 clubs and societies, including one of the largest numbers of sports clubs in a Scottish university. There is also a wide variety of cultural, political, spiritual, theatrical and subject-based societies for students, which all hold regular events and socials. A well-established International Society organises events for students from around the world.

Students enjoy the University’s superb environment alongside magnificent countryside and seascape, in a city that offers something to suit all tastes in arts, culture, leisure and entertainment. Aberdeen is Scotland's third largest city and a place with a lively combination of historic charm, thriving economy and cosmopolitan community.
